What’s in a name? The Velvet Restaurant and Lounge

As with The Josie, the hotel’s restaurant and lounge, The Velvet, received its name from the rich history of one of Rossland’s most remarkable residents, Olaus Jeldness. Mine developer and ski extraordinaire, Olaus Jeldness arrived in the town in 1894 following several years mining in various US states after a move from his native Norway. It was here that he settled and found himself as the co-discoverer of one of his most valuable mines, the Velvet.

During his time in Rossland he developed a reputation as one of Rossland’s legendary skiers; famous for his daring runs on 3 metre-long skies. Jeldness was also known for his mountaintop tea parties, most notably the one he threw after the sale of the Velvet, thus inspiring the name of the town’s newest dining spot.

Après Matters

Every mountain man and wilderness woman knows the pleasure of après. A post-adventure beverage is more than a drink. It’s a chance to catch up on the day’s accomplishments, even if the only thing you accomplished was après itself.
