What Is The Rossland Winter Carnival?

Created in 1898 by transplanted Norwegian gold miner, Olaus Jeldness, Rossland Winter Carnival is Canada’s longest running winter festival. Jeldness, now recognized as the “Father of Competitive Skiing in Canada,” organized tree clearing operations on the local mountain to create the first downhill ski runs which formed the foundations of the competitive side of the carnival. He was the winner of both the Canadian Championship Ski Jumping contest and the Canadian Champion Ski Race at the inaugural event. During the 2013 edition of the carnival, a larger-than-life bronze statue of Jeldness was erected in downtown Rossland to commemorate his contributions to both the town and the sport of skiing.
